NH Parental Notification Law... steadily putting abortion further and futher out of reach.
House Speaker Douglas Scamman has reversed his earlier position and endorsed a 2003 law that would require minor girls to notify a parent before getting an abortion.
Scamman told The Telegraph this week he had [previously] signed on with a group urging the U.S. Supreme Court to oppose the law.
This comes as the law, found unconstitutional by a federal appeals court, heads to the U.S. Supreme Court next month.
ScamMan says he originally opposed the law because it didn’t have a clause to protect the health of the woman. But now [that he has been pressured by anti-choice groups] he realizes that a woman could go before a judge and get waiver to the notification law. He said that before,
"I did not have a copy of the brief. I did not read it,"
Idiot.
Lynch asks court to overthrow parental notification law
Gov. John Lynch said two courts already have rejected
Lynch filed a brief with the court on Wednesday asking it to find the law unconstitutional. He said it is a risk to the health of
"As governor, and as a father, I believe parents should be involved in these important decisions," he said. "But we must also recognize that there are cases where that is not possible -- and we should not risk the health and safety of young women in those cases," Lynch said.
Unlike ScamMan, Lynch sees that merely being able to go before a judge and ask for a waiver does not replace a clause guaranteeing an exception for when the health of the woman is in danger. Medical choices should be made by a doctor not by a judge in a court of law. But try telling that to a Republican!
